"Working on Opportunity"
In 1950 before the days of goverment loans and Pell grants, it was difficult to go to college without family money. UNC Greensboro then called "Woman College" was one of the better schools with a good work program for students without money. Students could work 10, 20 or 30 hours a week and apply the work to tuition. Armed with excellent grades, no money and high expectations I headed for Greensboro the fall of l950.
I loved it. Many of the working students were class officers and the campus was beautiful. I liked the other girls, the food and the dorms. I was in the science program and working 30 hours in the dining hall.
I had to get up at 5:30 a.m. and be at the dining hall at six. I had a hard time waking up because back then we had no modern clocks . I had a Big Ben wind up clock which I set on top of a big tin dishpan and when the alarm went off--Oh ! Could I hear it.!! After working breakfast, I headed for my eight o'clock class.
I had class until eleven then back to the dining hall to serve and eat lunch. Back to labs from 2-5, then back to the dining hall to work dinner until seven. At seven, I'd walk back to the dorm for the rest of the day. I didn't study much because I really did not have much time. I did, however, pay very strict attention in class to the professors lectures and worked hard in the labs.
The first year was the hardest, but I pushed on and in four years, I graduated. Though those years were difficult, they lay a foundation for life which every young person should have. Thanks UNC-G for giving me the opportunity!!
